Point Roberts Marina Maintenance Dredging

Point Roberts, Washington

Why It Matters

Point Roberts Marina’s entrance structures partially interrupt the natural westward movement of sediment along the shoreline. As a result, beach sediment accumulates east of the marina entrance, while the shoreline to the west experiences erosion. Annual bypass dredging moves this sediment around the marina entrance to maintain natural sediment transport and support beach and forage fish habitat.

Project Impact

Anchor QEA worked with Point Roberts Marina to plan and permit its annual sediment bypass dredging and beach nourishment program. Our team obtained the required federal, state, and local permits and approvals for the work.

The permitted program allows up to 10,000 cubic yards of accumulated beach sediment to be moved annually for 10 years. During low tides, sediment is moved from areas east and west of the marina entrance and placed along the beach west of the entrance, returning sediment to the littoral system.

Innovations

By beneficially reusing native beach material, the project helps restore natural sediment transport, reduce erosion along the western beach, and maintain forage fish habitat.
